Family history Research At Sefton Church we get many enquiries from people wanting to trace their family history through entries in the parish registers or in search for a family grave. Records of baptisms, weddings and burials can be invaluable in helping to complete family trees. A separate set of civil records is maintained (births, marriages, deaths) and supplements the information contained in parish records. If you are hoping to trace records connected with Sefton Parish Church you will need to know that the church itself holds no wedding or baptism registers dating before 1850, though we do keep an alphabetical list of all names contained in the registers. Records Prior to 1850 All parish records prior to this date are held at: The Lancashire Records Office Microfiche copies of registers are also available to view at Crosby Library The registers themselves are not available for you to view. Civil records are held at the Liverpool Register Office - www.liverpool.gov.uk/Registrars_office/index.asp. This website also includes a helpful section on family history - Liverpool Register Office Records after 1850 Records from 1850 onwards are still held at Sefton Church and searches can be arranged by contacting the Rector giving details of names being researched and dates. Duplicate certificates etc. can be issued on payment of the standard fees (information on request). Please note enquirers will not be allowed to look through the registers themselves. Usually people are on hand at the Church ‘Open Days’ to assist with research but it is best to contact us before you visit to check. Locating a Grave in the Churchyard. We also have a good record of burials within the churchyard and most are recorded and kept at the Church. Trying to find a grave can be almost impossible without help and we are always willing to try and help locate a family plot. This can sometimes take time so please do not come to the church on the off chance that we might be able to help you. Ideally we would ask you to contact the Rev Irene Cowell giving details of the name of the deceased and a date (or approx date when they died) and any other family members that may be in the same grave. This will help us with our search. Searches inevitably take time (sometimes a great deal of time for more complex searches). A donation towards church costs would be appreciated to allow us to continue to provide this service. This is, of course, at your discretion
